Palm Pre and Transfering contacts

For my techie friends:

Transfer Contacts From Palm Pre to New Phone

Recently I ran into a situation where I needed to get the contacts off of a Palm Pre and import them into a new Android phone.  Searching Palm’s support website offered no help as Palm seemed to only offer ways to import contacts into a Palm device.  So doing a little research, I was able to find a way to bypass installing software, export the contacts into a file, and then import that file into a Gmail account which is setup on the new phone.
Let’s get started on exporting the contacts from your Palm Pre.  If you’ve already gotten your new phone activated and your Palm Pre no longer has service, you can complete these steps by connecting to a wireless network.
  • Open the Phone on the Palm Pre like you are going to make a call.
  • For CDMA phones, dial ##66623# and for GSM phones, dial #*66623# and press the Call button
  • If you aren’t sure if you are CDMA or GSM, you can check out this handy reference.  If in doubt, CDMA will likely work for you.
  • Tap the green “CelleBrite Export” button
  • After the export is complete, follow the directions to connect your phone to your computer.
  • Access the USB drive by tapping on USB drive notification
  • Most computers do not have “View Hidden Files” set as a default so you will likely need to go to your Control Panel, click Folder Options, click the “View” tab and select “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”.  Click “Apply” and “OK” to close the window.

View Hidden Files (click to expand)
  • Once your phone is connected as a USB drive and you can see the hidden folders, navigate to the .temp folder on your phone.
  • Find a file called “PmMigration.vcf” and copy this file to your desktop.  This file contains all of your contacts from your Palm Pre.  You can import this file into Gmail using these steps.
