Words of Wisdom Sunday 01/13/13

We have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people act in a certain way, we cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is remember to keep a positive attitude. It will keep our burdens light.

Forgot iPhone Passcode

Forgot your iPhone Passcode?

Let's face it we have all been there, you go to your phone, computer or website and you stare at the screen and draw a complete blank. You have just completely forgotten your password. You try your normal usual passwords and nope no luck.

With an iPhone if you forget your passcode there is no override or bypass option at this time that doesn't result in data loss. Yup you read that right DATA LOSS. The two words that drain all color from you and cause you to be sick.

However there is a potential saving grace! You will still have to restore the iPhone in order to use the phone BUT you may not have to lose everything!

Contacts:

If you have backed up to iCloud you are all set and safe! If not sorry charlie they are gone.

Photos:

Remember Photo Stream only saves some not all your photos and they are limited. So some of them are through Photo Stream but what about the rest? And what happens if you didn't have Photo Stream on? Are those priceless memories gone for good? NO!

Hook your iPhone to the computer
Go to My Computer/Computer

Look to see if you see your iPhone listed
If so you can breath easy you can get those photos off. If not sorry charlie grab the tissues because its over.
To transfer the photos to your computer simply double click the iphone
Double click internal Storage
Double click DCIM

You will see either pictures or a set of folders. These folders house your images.

Drag and drop to your computer (either desktop or specific folder) and once the copy box is done go into iTunes and click that dreaded RESTORE button. (You might want to double check in the folder or desktop that the photos fully transferred before you click restore)

Palm Pre and Transfering contacts

For my techie friends:

Transfer Contacts From Palm Pre to New Phone

Recently I ran into a situation where I needed to get the contacts off of a Palm Pre and import them into a new Android phone.  Searching Palm’s support website offered no help as Palm seemed to only offer ways to import contacts into a Palm device.  So doing a little research, I was able to find a way to bypass installing software, export the contacts into a file, and then import that file into a Gmail account which is setup on the new phone.
Let’s get started on exporting the contacts from your Palm Pre.  If you’ve already gotten your new phone activated and your Palm Pre no longer has service, you can complete these steps by connecting to a wireless network.
  • Open the Phone on the Palm Pre like you are going to make a call.
  • For CDMA phones, dial ##66623# and for GSM phones, dial #*66623# and press the Call button
  • If you aren’t sure if you are CDMA or GSM, you can check out this handy reference.  If in doubt, CDMA will likely work for you.
  • Tap the green “CelleBrite Export” button
  • After the export is complete, follow the directions to connect your phone to your computer.
  • Access the USB drive by tapping on USB drive notification
  • Most computers do not have “View Hidden Files” set as a default so you will likely need to go to your Control Panel, click Folder Options, click the “View” tab and select “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”.  Click “Apply” and “OK” to close the window.
View Hidden Files
View Hidden Files (click to expand)
  • Once your phone is connected as a USB drive and you can see the hidden folders, navigate to the .temp folder on your phone.
  • Find a file called “PmMigration.vcf” and copy this file to your desktop.  This file contains all of your contacts from your Palm Pre.  You can import this file into Gmail using these steps.

Galaxy SIII Safe Mode

I know that this is normally a iPhone Tutorial but I came across this and wanted to share for any customer service or tech reps out there:

Safe Mode - Samsung Galaxy S® III

Note Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue. Safe Mode should always be performed prior to a hard (factory) reset.
Note With Safe mode enabled, test device and application functionality. If the previous issue fails to occur, the cause has been isolated to a 3rd party application and all recently installed / updated applications should be uninstalled. With Safe mode disabled, reinstall then test each application, one at a time, to identify which is causing the problem.
Enable Safe mode
